The Japanese government will be helping the Philippines in establishing 11 new sophisticated radar stations in the southern parts of the Philippines by providing equipment and systems via G2G or government-to-government program.

In the statement released by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and President Rodrigo R. Duterte’s meeting in Japan in October 2017, the Ministry said Abe mentioned that Japan will provide coastal surveillance radars, including a support team for its capacity building measures to the Philippines.

According to the Japanese Prime Minister, the radars that will be provided will help “to ensure the effective operation of the patrol vessels and other equipment.”
A Japanese shipbuilder, the Japan Marine United is currently in the process of completing the delivery of 10 units 44-meter Multi-role Response Vessels (MRRV) to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), wherein 6 were already in the active PCG service.
These 44-meter MRRVs are being acquired by Philippines through Official Development Assistance (ODA) loan provided by Japan International Cooperation Agency’s (JICA).

Likewise, Japan also donated high-speed Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats (RHIB) to the PCG.
PCG’s acquisition of two bigger MRRVs from Japan is also in the pipeline.
